As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it currently considered by another journal.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word file format.
  • All in-text citations and the references list are in Oxford format
  • The text adheres to the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The text is formatted according to the journal template.

CIMR accepts original research articles, artworks, interviews, diary entries, policy briefs, literature reviews, and other formats that contribute to disseminating debates in the broad field of migration research.

In line with the journal’s objectives, we seek contributions that are concise and accessible to both academic and non-academic audiences, including policymakers, practitioners, civil society actors, and engaged members of the public. The journal does not favour any particular theoretical or methodological approach.

Authors are welcome to contact the editorial board (cimr@mau.se) in advance of submission to discuss the suitability of their ideas and ensure alignment with the journal’s aim to publish research in diverse and often non-traditional formats. CIMR accepts submissions continuously throughout the year. Accepted submissions are published on a rolling basis on the CIMR website and subsequently compiled into themed issues.

Please note that CIMR operates with limited editorial resources. We therefore ask authors to ensure that their manuscripts are thoroughly proofread, clearly structured, and formatted according to our authors’ guidelines before submission. References should be properly formatted, and the manuscript should be as close to publication-ready as possible.

Authorship and Author Information

Authors and co-authors do not need to be affiliated with an academic institution. However, all contributions must be grounded in research or practice-based insights, and the editorial team retains full discretion to determine whether a submission is relevant to the journal’s scope.

Each submission must include a short author biography (max. 100 words) which should include the author's academic or professional background, institutional affiliation and title.

Language

Submissions are currently accepted in English, Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian. Publications in other languages can be discussed. Manuscripts must be proofread prior to submission to ensure they meet high standards of clarity and readability. The journal does not offer language editing services, and submissions may be rejected if the language is insufficiently clear.

To make the articles accessible to a broad readership, CIMR aims for fewer references—typically around 15-25, depending on the format and scope of the piece.

Formatting, tables and figures

Submissions must be provided in Microsoft Word format and follow the CIMR formatting guidelines. Please bear in mind that:

  • Only up to level two subheadings should be used.
  • The journal uses a two-column layout—please keep this in mind when including tables, figures, or other visual material.

It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that the necessary copyright permissions have been obtained for any figures or images included in the submission. The submission should include a statement on this.

Repeated references should use a simplified format (author last name, year, page number(s), if applicable).

Review Process

CIMR applies a double editorial peer review process. Manuscripts do not need to be anonymized prior to submission.

Formats

CIMR welcomes submissions in a wide variety of formats (see our editorial policy for details). Because of this diversity, a single style guide is not applicable. As a general rule, submissions should be between 2,000 and 4,000 words, excluding references. All submissions should include an abstract of no more than 150 words summarizing the main arguments and conclusions of the article and 3–5 keywords. Authors with ideas about alternative or creative formats are encouraged to contact the editorial team in advance.

Ethics

It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that the appropriate ethical approval has been obtained for any research involving human subjects. If applicable, please indicate in an endnote the type of ethical approval that was sought and granted.
