Abstract

Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) fosters problem-solving, collaboration, and entrepreneurial thinking by engaging students in real-world challenges with external stakeholders. Although it has been extensively promoted in European education policies, integrating CBL into research-intensive universities remains challenging. At Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), CBL was implemented within the UNIC alliance and the Stifterverband-funded project “Develop Your Entrepreneurial Skills.” RUB’s strong tradition of Research-Based Learning (RBL) called for an alignment of CBL with existing didactic principles. In a series of strategic discussions, RUB stakeholders developed a framework to integrate CBL into the RBL context. Key steps included defining stakeholder roles, creating a flexible 5-ECTS module within the interdisciplinary curriculum, and training faculty in coaching-oriented teaching. Support measures, such as professional development workshops and funding programs (CBL@RUB), ensured broad acceptance. A key component was to evaluate students’ competence gains with the help of a newly developed assessment tool based on the EntreComp framework. Pilot studies using this tool showed significant improvements in practical knowledge application, teamwork, and problem-solving. Collaboration with other universities, such as Malmö University, provided insights into best practices. CBL at RUB enhances student engagement and employability by bridging academic learning with real-world challenges. The experience demonstrates that CBL and RBL can coexist, creating a dynamic learning environment that prepares students for complex problem-solving beyond academia.
