Abstract

The understanding that matter and organisms consists of small particles and the conservation of mass is the basis for learning science. Furthermore, in the sciences it is important to understand how various physical properties can arise and change in a product. It is therefore important to know the difference between the concepts of pure substance and mixtures, since pure substances often have precise and durable physical properties, which mixture does not have. But learning these concepts has proven to be difficult.


The purpose of this study was to let students, studying chemistry 1 in the technical base year, to carry out various practical exercises on the particle nature of matter to see if this form of teaching could increase their understanding of mass conservation. Furthermore, a model “The product's root system of substances” was developed to practice distinguishing the concepts of pure substance and mixture. Exercises were done at the beginning of the course. At the end of the course, they answered five questions about the preservation of the mass with everyday connection.


It was about 50% who answered correct on all five questions, which is slightly better than 34% of the group who did not receive any special education about the particle nature of matter and the conservation of the mass. A certain increase in understanding of the difference between the concepts of pure substance and mixture could be discerned in their examination answers, but this needs to be examined to a greater extent in order to be confirmed.
