Abstract

The aim of this article is to, based on my experience as a supervisor in two different Bachelor programmes at Malmö University and the policy documents attached to them, discuss supervision as a multifaceted work alliance between supervisor and supervisee. The discussion will explore five different themes that are relevant for supervision at undergraduate and graduate level: the different roles involved in supervision, the emotional ties between supervisors and supervisees, the power relations in supervision, group seminars and the practice of giving feedback. The article concludes that supervision encompasses a plurality of roles and styles that needs to be adapted to each student and over time. Hence, both supervisors and supervisees ought to continuously reflect and re-assess the different aspects of their work alliance if they want to make it reach its full potential.
